Biography
Pittsburgh-based indie folk, indie rock
Born and raised in a small town outside of Pittsburgh, songwriter and producer Brenna Slate invented her musical project Lounna out of a love for storytelling. Known for her signature blend of indie folk, rock, and Americana, Lounna has cultivated a sound that she dubs “dreamy cottagerock” – a unique genre that evokes a sense of warm nostalgia with powerful, personal lyrics and themes of grief, healing, and living life intentionally.
Lounna typically performs solo acoustic sets that feature a considerable range of her signature originals as well as covers by other modern indie folk bands such as Bear's Den, First Aid Kit, and The Lumineers. Recently, Lounna has been able to better replicate the dreamy cottagerock vibe in her live sets with occasional accompaniment on violin and bass, and even organized her debut full band performance for the Garden For Winter Album Release Show.
In January 2025, Lounna released her sophomore studio album Garden For Winter, a deep reflection of life’s evermoving seasons, rooted in lessons of resilience and perseverance and woven with imagery of the impending spring after a long, liminal winter. Co-produced with local engineer and producer Daniel Blake, Garden For Winter also includes collaborations with artists Gabrielle Gutierrez and Reliable Child. The album has garnered praise from indie music blogs and even earned Lounna the title of WYEP’s Pittsburgh Artist of the Week during the week of release.
Since her debut When I’m Home and its follow-up When I’m Home (Again), Slate’s storytelling has resonated with listeners through the gentle vulnerability, folk melodies, and themes that highlight our shared humanity. Lounna’s music is a soundtrack for the quiet moments of reflection, reminding us of what it means to remain hopeful even amidst the darkness.
